State employee discipline records now public

(Posted: Nov. 24, 2008)

Among the many changes to state law that went into effect after the last legislative session was a law that makes state employee disciplinary records subject to public inspection under Arizona public records law. A disciplinary record includes actions taken against an employee and the employee's responses to all actions.

Prior to the legislation, the names, positions and salaries of state employees were public.

A disciplinary record may contain the following:  written reprimands, suspensions, disciplinary dismissals, disciplinary demotions, Notice of Charges letters, responses to Notices of Charges, grievances specifically challenging a non-appealable written reprimand or suspension; and, Personnel Board or Court's final determination regarding an employee's appeal of appealable disciplinary action.
